We recommend transitioning to the Parenting Stress Index, Fourth Edition Short Form (PSI-4-SF).
The PSI Short Form (PSI/SF) is a direct derivative of the Parenting Stress Index (PSI) full-length test. All 36 items on the Short Form are contained on the Long Form with identical wording and are written at a 5th-grade reading level, for parents of children 12 years and younger. The PSI/SF yields a Total Stress score from three scales: Parental Distress, Parent-Child Dysfunctional Interaction, and Difficult Child.
The PSI-3/SF was developed at the request of clinicians and researchers who regularly use the full-length PSI and indicated the need for a valid measure administered in less than 10 minutes. It is ideal for clinicians who work in a variety of primary health care settings and have a limited time available to patients, targeting those families most in need of follow-up services. It also is valuable for use in schools and mental health clinics where the parent-child dyad is not the primary focus of the assessment.
